Mortality & Morbidity Liaison Committee (MMLC)
(An Interdisciplinary Committee of Actuaries, Medical Directors, and Underwriters)

. Mission Statement
To promote and facilitate the preparation and dissemination of mortality and morbidity information on medical impairments and other risks from both insurance and non-insurance sources. This is to be accomplished through the interdisciplinary cooperation of medical directors, actuaries and underwriters through communication with users of this information to determine their needs and interests.
II. Committee Membership
1. Membership is comprised of representatives of each of the three parent organizations (normally 3 from each organization):
a) Society of Actuaries (SOA)
b) American Academy of Insurance Medicine (AAIM)
c) Association of Home Office Underwriters (AHOU)
2. On an ex-officio basis:
a) Executive Committee representatives from the parent organizations (listed above)
b) Staff person representing the Center for Medico-Actuarial Statistics (CMAS) of MIB
c) Staff person from the Society of Actuaries
d) Other individuals, as designated, who can provide support to the committee

. Duration of term:
i) Minimum 3 years
ii) Maximum term to be determined by the parent organizations (SOA, AAIM, AHOU), and the MMLC.
III. Functions of the Mortality and Morbidity Liaison Committee
1. Facilitate joint mortality and morbidity studies that support the risk classification process.
a) Provide forum for synergism among underwriters, actuaries, and medical directors to exchange ideas and formulate studies.
b) Raise issues and receive direction from each discipline’s mortality and morbidity committee as to which studies are needed. Then determine and prioritize which studies will be done.
c) Facilitate the appointment of Task Forces to actually conduct the studies. Subcommittees, composed of individuals from all three disciplines, will be responsible for defining, initiating, analyzing, and monitoring studies through completion.
2. Provide direction to MIB and CMAS
a) Work with MIB to provide direction to CMAS for prioritization and allocation of CMAS resources for processing experience studies.
b) Coordinate and define information parameters to be used by CMAS in the collection and processing of mortality/morbidity data from MIB member companies.
c) Evaluate the accuracy, usefulness, and underwriting significance of compiled results.
3. Dissemination of information within the insurance community.
a) Present the results of studies with aid of Task Forces and parent committees.
b) Report to the parent organizations on the recommendations and action plans determined by the Liaison Committee. Also, report back on other issues of concern/relevance raised by other disciplines of the Liaison Committee.
c) Provide information as necessary to support the risk classification process.
d) Facilitate the development and use of information needed in the risk classification process.
IV. Meetings
Meetings will be held at least once a year. Meeting costs (e.g., meeting facility, lunch, etc.) will be shared among the three parent organizations on an equitable basis, with each organization underwriting these costs in turn.
V. Appointment of Chairperson
A representative of each of the parent organizations will hold positions of Chairperson and Vice Chairperson on a rotating basis. Representatives will start in the position of Vice Chairperson, and automatically rotate into the position of Chairperson the following year. The term of each office will be 1 year.

Rotation started in 1993 with an SOA representative as Chairperson and an AAIM representative as Vice Chairperson. The underwriting representative will rotate into the position of Vice Chairperson concurrent with the vice chairperson)
